The PIPE4AI System for effective Monitoring and Benchmarking of AI Models

Role in PROTEAS project: Developer and Provider of the PIPE4AI System

PROTEAS is one of the major EDF projects spearheading the utilization of big data analytics algorithms and AI models in mission critical environments. This endeavour introduces multivariable optimization challenges when considering the importance of leveraging such algorithms and models in an efficient manner without introducing complexities that can disrupt the operational capacity of the end-user team.

The necessity for fit-for-purpose monitoring and benchmarking frameworks and systems.

The utilization of big data analytics algorithms and particularly AI models in mission critical environments necessitates the development of appropriate frameworks and systems that would enable their effective monitoring and benchmarking.

To this end, monitoring is essential to provide transparency in the training and operation of respective models allowing the effective auditing, version control and utilization of backups where appropriate. At the same time current benchmarking frameworks must be expanded to consolidate traditional performance metrics with those providing operational insights regarding how target functionality is achieved (e.g., energy consumption and hardware resources utilization).

These combined monitoring and benchmarking capabilities streamline the utilization of AI models while at the same time support decision-making regarding the effective versioning, fine-tuning and deployment of such models. Finally, this perspective, focusing on enhanced operational understanding of AI models, allows us to consider the contributions made within the context of PROTEAS as part of a wider innovation ecosystem that would enable European partners to acquire an industrialized capacity of developing, calibrating and deploying fit-for-purpose AI models at an accelerated pace.

PIPE4AI System Introduced in PROTEAS

To support this endeavour UBITECH has developed the PIPE4AI System that provides both a modular framework and an innovative implementation for the monitoring and benchmarking of AI model architectures ensuring effective auditing and decision support. To achieve this, UBITECH conducted extensive analysis of current offerings and identified respective gaps that were addressed with subsequent design and development efforts focusing on creating a modular and adaptable system.

The resulting framework carefully considers all data loading, validation and transformation steps as well as model training, evaluation and serving processes. This allows the support of respective optimizations along the entirety of a machine learning pipeline.  Implementing this framework, the PIPE4AI system allows the conduction of benchmarks that track multiple metrics of energy consumption, performance efficiency and hardware utilization on a temporal basis, providing a near real-time view of the underlying operations and effectively capturing dynamic workloads and fluctuations of resource utilization. All monitoring and benchmarking data is subsequently stored in a manner that enables analysis of energy consumption patterns and resource utilization over extended periods.

The modularity and adaptability of the system is paramount in allowing the monitoring and benchmarking of different types of model architectures, applied for the analysis of varying data modalities. This allows the PIPE4AI system to support not only current implementations but also potential expansions of the PROTEAS capabilities supporting the acceleration of innovation and system refinement processes.

PROTEAS as a catalyst of knowledge exchange for European Organizations

A critical aspect of the PROTEAS project is its operation as a strategic catalyst for knowledge creation/ technology development. Bringing together teams from different European organizations of variable nature (from established defence contractors to innovating SMEs) creates a dynamic knowledge exchange environment that produces novel technical and operational know-how at an accelerated pace.
